Matthew Pineda
Grade 12 Male Athlete of the Year - Bill Gray Award Grade 12 Sportsmanship Award - Bill McKercher Award Matthew Pineda has grown into one of the leaders and pillars of our Rebels Athletics' Program. He was a two-sport star, playing volleyball and basketball as well as a senior mentor for our Rebels Athletics' Crew (RAC) volunteer leadership program. It was in basketball where he left his mark. He has been the team leader and captain since his Grade 9 year. His dedication and determination to work on his skills was matched with his loyalty and leadership to help his teammates and coaches strive to be the best they can be. His senior year culminated with the 2020 4A BC High School Provincial Championship title. Matthew was also a winner of the SBMC Senior Basketball Scholarship award. Matthew is also the winner of our 2020 Grade 12 Male Sportsmanship (Bill McKercher Award) with his work in RAC and helping support our junior basketball teams. |
Laini Glover
Grade 12 Female Athlete of the Year - Co-Winner Diane Murphy Award Laini concludes her senior year winning the Athlete of the Year in all five years of her high school career. Laini was a four-sport star, playing on our Basketball, Volleyball, Netball and Track & Field teams. Her passion for sport combined with her ability to lead her teammates with pride, compassion and positiivity made her a key contributor to all her teams. Laini has followed in the footsteps of her family; sister Calli, uncle Cody Cormack and father Steve, whom were all Burnaby South graduates and Varsity sports stars. |
Joanne Lee
Grade 12 Female Athlete of the Year - Co-Winner Diane Murphy Award Quiet yet confident sums up Joanne Lee. Her drive and determination to succeed and help others has been the staple of her High School Athletic career. She was a three-sport star, competing on our Swimming, Volleyball and Badminton teams. She was the player-coach for our swim team, lending her vast club experience to help our younger swimmers develop their skills and help lead our team to compete at BC Provincials on a yearly basis. She excelled in Badminton, helping our team qualify for the BC Provincials in 2019. Joanne's constant smile and upbeat personality made her an easy choice as a senior mentor for our younger student-athletes. |
Zyre Aspiras
Grade 12 Female Sportsmanship Florence Petersen Award Through her entire five-year high school career, Zyre has epitomized sportsmanship both on and off the Varsity athletic arena court. In each of her grade years, she was a multi-sport athlete being a premier athlete on each of the teams she played on. Zyre's dedication to our Athletics' program extended to game operations and varsity events. She was always willing to lend her spare time to help ensure our events ran smoothly. She easily assumed the role of senior leader mentoring our younger RAC students in event hosting and officiating. Zyre's newly found passion for photography helped our program capture stunning action photos of our student-atheletes and events that we will cherish for years to come. |
Mackenzie Unsworth & Eryn Van't Hullenaar
Sports Administration (RAC) Ernie Fletcher Award These two ladies have epitomized what the Ernie Fletcher Award for oustanding work in our Athletics' Department. Both Mackenzie and Eryn represented our program with total pride and care for their entire high school duration. These ladies were full supporters of our student-athletes, spent countless hours in the stands cheering on our teams; worked behind the score-table; were the foundation to our vibrant social media team. Most importantly, they worked hard and provided the perfect example for our younger peers to strive towards. They carried the torch of what RAC represented and provided for others; a place to belong and a place to call a home during school. Mackenzie and Eryn have left a lasting legacy for our program and we are proud to honour their work with this prestigous award and scholarships towards their future academic goals. |
Conlin Duong
Grade 11 Male Athlete of the Year Don Moore Award Conlin was a deserving winner of this award. He was a multi-sport athlete competing on our Varsity Swim, Basketball and Ultimate teams this year. His passion for athletics is vibrant and the ideal role model for our younger student-athletes to strive towards. Conlin is a quiet individual who lets his work ethic, pride and care for his teammates and teams speak volumes. Sport has enabled Conlin to grow his confidence and respect. Conlin has a bright future as he heads into his Senior Varsity year next year and has aspirations and is one of the front-runners to win the Grade 12 Athlete of the Year. |
Diya Sehgal
Grade 11 Female Athlete of the Year Sue Mathie Award Diya returns to the award stage earning the Grade 11 Athlete of the Year award with her contributions on our Senior Girls Volleyball and Basketball teams. Her tenacious work ethic and her attention to detail has helped our Volleyball and Basketball teams acheive new heights this year, with our Basketball team returning to the BC Provincial Championships. Diya is a quiet leader who lets her athleticism, industrious and passion for sport be the example for others to follow. We are excited to have Diya continue to represent the Black and Yellow and look forward to watching her compete on our Varsity teams for her Grade 12 Graduation year. |
Jimmy Zaborniak & Karan Aujla
Grade 10 Male Athlete of the Year Co-Winners Dave Milne Award Both Jimmy and Karan have been full value on winning this prestigous award in the name of Burnaby South teacher and coach Dave Milne. Jimmy and Karan were multisport atheltes, competing to help acheive success on our Junior Boys Volleyball team and Senior Boys Basketball teams. Our Junior Boys excelled to earn a spot at the BC Invitiational Provincial Championships. Both of these young and talented players played key roles in helping our Senior Boys Basketball team win the Provincial Championships, our second school title in the past three years. Both are quiet but have a drive and burning passion to be the best they can be on the court. We are proud to have these two be the young pillars of our program and look forward to these young men become leaders on our Senior Varsity teams. |
Emma Celio
Grade 10 Female Athlete of the Year We are proud to distinguish Emma as our Grade 10 Athlete of the Year. Emma was an elite multisport athlete, competing on our Junior Girls Volleyball team and began the work on helping organize our Junior and Senior Girls Soccer team. Whilst excelling on the court as a go-to player, she has quickly garnered the respect and trust within our Athletics' program to become a point person to help organize and complete tasks in our bustling program. Emma has a natural nurturing ability to lead by example and is always quick to help our younger members of our Athletics' program whenever help is needed. Her vibrant positivity and beaming smile has become a staple for others to embody and carry forward. We are excited to watch Emma's continued growth for her Grade 11 and 12 academic years. |
Charley Kutak
Grade 9 Male Athlete of the Year Humble, kind, positive and caring are all traits that define Charley well. His care for others permiates through his pours, for others to see and do themselves. Along with this caring side, is also a wildly competitive and hard-working side that enables Charley to succeed as a multisport Athlete. Charley was a member of our Grade 9 Boys Basketball and Volleyball teams this year and would have been a member of our Ball Hockey team if a spring season was to be completed. We are excited to have Charley as a member of our vibrant program and look forward to his continued development both in and out of the sporting arena. |
Carol Ko
Grade 9 Female Athlete of the Year Carol was a multi-sport athlete, competing on our Grade 9 Volleyball and Junior Co-ed Badminton teams this year. Although our Badminton season was cut short, Carol's work ethic and sportsmanship was on full display during our Volleyball season. Carol has quickly gained the trust of her coaches and team-mates with her industriousness and her eagerness to compete to get better every single day. We are excited to have a front row seat for Carol's Grade 10 Varsity season next year. |

Grade 8 Male Athlete of the Year Co-Winners With the early conclusion to our 2020 Varsity season, left us with six deserving recipients for our Grade 8 Boys Athlete of the Year award. Matthew Aprim, Akash Seth, Peter Boujdok, Mitchell Rahman, Marcel Tesson and Roan Mendoza were all members of our Basketball and Volleyball teams. Above their performance on the court, they were all involved in our Athletics' program helping RAC host our many Rebels Classic Varsity tournaments. |
Tracy Lau & Jessica Ho
Grade 8 Female Athlete of the Year Co-Winners Both Tracy and Jessica were well deserving of winning this award as they competed on our Volleyball and Basketball teams this year. They were always seen playing hard in games and practices to help our teams compete. Both of these young ladies have been tremendous additions to our RAC team as their smiles and bring constanst positivity was always welcomed. We are fortunate to have these two young student-athletes in our program for years to come! |
